UK Drone Map — UK Airspace, FRZ and Drone No-Fly Zone Map

Free planning aid consolidating UK drone no-fly zones, airspace, Flight Restriction Zones, NOTAMs, weather, and conservation layers (SSSI, SAC, SPA, Ramsar, AONB, National Parks) on a single map. For UK pilots only. Not a substitute for NATS AIS or CAA guidance.

Frequently asked questions about flying a drone in the UK

Is UK Drone Map free?

Yes. UK Drone Map is completely free to use. There are no subscriptions, accounts, or in-app purchases. All airspace and conservation data is cached locally in your browser using IndexedDB, so the map continues to work offline after the initial load.

What is a Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ)?

A Flight Restriction Zone is a defined airspace volume around an aerodrome in the United Kingdom. FRZs are designated by the CAA and published by NATS in the official UK Aeronautical Information Service. Flying a drone inside an FRZ requires permission from the aerodrome before flight under Article 94A of the Air Navigation Order 2016.

Do I need an Operator ID and Flyer ID to fly a drone in the UK?

Yes — since 1 January 2026, any drone weighing 100 g or more requires both. The Operator ID registers you as the responsible person (£10.33 per year, displayed on the drone). The Flyer ID is a free online theory test that proves you understand the basic rules. Both are issued by the CAA at register-drones.caa.co.uk. Drones under 100 g are exempt from registration but airspace and overflight rules still apply.

What is a NOTAM and why does it matter for drone pilots?

A NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) is an official notice about temporary changes or hazards in UK airspace — including UAS operations, danger area activations, military flying, obstacles, and Article 239 Restriction of Flying orders. UK Drone Map displays seven NOTAM categories sourced from the NATS / UK AIS feed. Always verify time-critical NOTAMs directly with NATS AIS at ais.nats.aero before flying.

Can I fly a drone over an SSSI or conservation area?

Overflight of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Area (SPA) or Ramsar site is not automatically illegal in the UK, but it is a criminal offence to disturb the protected features. Flushing nesting birds, disturbing seal pupping, or scaring grazing animals can be prosecuted under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Practical rule: stay above 100 ft AGL during March–August, and never approach concentrations of birds or mammals.

WHAT THIS APP IS

UK Drone Map is a reference and planning aid only. It displays data from third-party sources to help you research airspace. It is not a substitute for your legal pre-flight obligations, official aeronautical information, or professional advice of any kind.

DATA ACCURACY — READ CAREFULLY

All airspace, weather, and restriction data shown in this app is sourced from third parties (OpenAIP, Open-Meteo, OSM and others). This data may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong. A green display, a clear map, or any indicator in this app does not mean it is safe or legal to fly. You must independently verify all information before every flight.

YOUR LEGAL OBLIGATIONS
  • You are the Remote Pilot in Command. You bear full and sole legal responsibility for the safe and lawful operation of your UAS at all times.
  • You must check current NOTAMs via NATS AIS (ais.nats.aero) before every flight — this app does not replace that.
  • You must comply with the Air Navigation Order 2016 (as amended), the UK Drone Code, and all applicable CAA regulations.
  • You must hold valid CAA Operator ID, Flyer ID, and any required competency certificates for your UAS and operation type.
  • This app grants no permission, exemption, or authorisation to fly anywhere. All permissions must be obtained from the relevant authority (CAA, NATS, aerodrome operator, or landowner).
  • This tool is designed for use in the United Kingdom only. Do not rely on it in other jurisdictions.
WEATHER DATA WARNING

Weather data displayed in this app is indicative only. It does not account for local conditions, micro-weather, or rapidly changing situations. It is solely your responsibility to obtain and assess weather information from official sources before flying. UK Drone Map accepts no responsibility for any reliance placed on weather data displayed in this app.

LIABILITY

To the fullest extent permitted by law, UK Drone Map, its developers, contributors and affiliates accept no liability whatsoever for any loss, damage, injury, prosecution, enforcement action, or other consequence arising from use of or reliance on this application — whether caused by inaccuracy, data failure, system error, or any other cause. Use of this application is entirely at your own risk.

UK DRONE MAP
Read the sky. Fly with confidence.
ukdronemap.app
WHY THIS EXISTS
UK drone pilots consult a fragmented stack before every flight — NATS AIS for NOTAMs, the CAA for rules, OpenAIP for airspace, a weather app for wind, a separate site for SSSIs and national parks. UK Drone Map consolidates the publicly available layers onto a single map so you can see the picture in one place.

It is a free, non-commercial planning aid. No account. No tracking. No ads.
WHAT IT IS — AND IS NOT

It is a visualisation of third-party open data: airspace geometry, weather, NOTAMs, protected areas, and restriction zones — displayed on a Leaflet map with a UK-only scope.

It is not an aeronautical information service. It does not grant permission to fly, replace a NATS AIS briefing, or substitute for the CAA Drone Code. Every flight decision remains yours as Remote Pilot in Command. Verify everything against the official source before you fly.

PHILOSOPHY
Show the data. Don't interpret it. A clear display in this app is not a green light — it's just what the source data says right now. The app does not advise, recommend, or endorse any flight decision.

Your data. Your decision. Your flight.
